In a bid to increase its social media presence, Google is considering buying a TikTok competitor. According to reports, the tech giant started talking about this move after the shutdown of Google+ which signalled the company’s momentary retreat from social. Google is planning to acquire video-sharing startup Firework to remain relevant on social media. There are some other acquisitions that are also under consideration. The development is being seen as a move to counter the viral TikTok app.
TikTok is China-based video-sharing app that has become a viral sensation amongst users globally in a short span of time. Several competitors are trying to emulate TikTok, owned by technology company ByteDance, but have so far failed to make any presence felt globally. On the other hand, TikTok has become the number one app in several countries.
Firework, based in California, also allows users to create and share short videos. It was created by former employees from LinkedIn and Snapchat. The app claims to be the ‘future of social mobile TV’ and as per the report it is currently valued at USD 100 million. Apart from Google, some other companies have shown interest in acquiring Firework. One of them is a Chinese technology company Weibo. But reports suggest that Google is far ahead in talks with the short video app. However, Firework and Google have not discussed pricing. People privy to the development claimed that YouTube executives are also part of the acquisition process but if everything goes as planned, Firework will under the Google brand.
